The last installment of the Revenge of Great Camera Shootout 2012 is now live! Below we have attached a breakdown of what happens.

REVENGE OF THE GREAT CAMERA SHOOTOUT PART THREE: PIXEL PEEPERS

In Part One we issued a challenge to the viewer to pick their favorite shot in a blind line up of all nine cameras, where you could only relay on creativity and your own personal taste. Part Two shocked and surprised you when we revealed which camera was which, and the debate began over how much creativity of the cinematographer plays a part in the final image.

Now in the reveal in Part Three, the final piece of the puzzle fits into place. The pixel peepers will finally breathe a sigh of relief to see how the cameras stack up against one another under the same grueling conditions. We put each of the nine cameras through three different shots with the same rigorous lighting designed by Bruce Logan, ASC.

We’ll give you glimpses of the RAW ungraded footage side-by-side with the graded, to show you what each camera is natively capable of. You’ll also see two brand new shots that better illustrate the differences between each camera. We’ll also give you a comparison between the original lighting and how each DP changed their shot for their creative version.

As we come full circle with the conclusion of the “Revenge of the Great Camera Shootout 2012” we hope that we’ve inspired you to go out and continue learning and developing yourself as a filmmaker.

It’s not the gear that determines greatness anymore, it’s you!

About the Series

In this series, Steve Weiss and his team look at the RED Epic, Arri Alexa, Sony F3 with Slog, Sony FS100, Canon C300, Panasonic GH2 (hacked), Canon 7D, Apple iPhone 4s, and the F65.

What’s new and different about this series is that you will find out what you can do with each of the above cameras on the same set by letting expert DPs who’ve mastered these cameras get creative with them. They’ve figured out the best profiles, they know how to light for their camera while keeping color timing in mind. This shootout is about two things- what a camera is capable of and what a DP can do with his abilities to make it look great with all of his skills, experience and talent. The key element here is talent. There are no winners as with all of our tests, since winning is dependent on your abilities.

This 90 minute documentary will be presented in three parts that will air on the 15th of June, July, and August. It’s critical you watch all three episodes to fully understand the total message. Each segment will feature three of the nine camera masters describing their approach to the creative shot. The three parts are interwoven and each will feature new guests imparting their knowledge and wisdom for you to learn from. Stop, listen and learn, it’s not all about the cameras!
